Quick answer

Air-fry whole sweet potatoes at 190–200°C for roughly 35–50 minutes, 2–3cm cubes at 190°C for 14–20 minutes, or wedges at 190–200°C for 18–25 minutes. Turn or shake partway through and check tenderness early: size, basket load and air-fryer model change the timing.

Whole sweet potatoes

Scrub, dry and pierce each potato several times. Rub with a thin film of oil and cook with space around it. Turn once if your machine browns unevenly. It is ready when the skin has tightened and a small knife reaches the centre with almost no resistance.

Cubes and wedges

Cut pieces evenly so they finish together. Toss with just enough oil to coat, then spread in one layer. Shake cubes two or three times; turn wedges once. A crowded basket steams the surfaces and extends the cooking time.

Oil and seasoning

One to two teaspoons of oil is enough for 400–500g sweet potato. Salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, cumin or dried thyme all work. Add sugary glazes near the end because they scorch before thick pieces become tender.

Model and basket-size variation

Air fryers differ in fan strength, wattage and usable basket area. Begin checking five minutes before the lower time, especially for a small portion or a preheated machine. Add time in short increments rather than assuming another model’s exact result.

Portions for one or two

Allow one medium whole potato per person, or about 200–250g raw cubes or wedges each as a substantial side. For two, a 400–500g batch needs enough basket area to sit mostly in one layer; otherwise cook in two rounds.

Storage and reheating

Cool leftovers and refrigerate within two hours. Eat within 48 hours or freeze. Reheat in the air fryer at 170–180°C until steaming hot throughout, checking frequently so the edges do not dry out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to preheat the air fryer?

Only if the manufacturer recommends it. A preheated machine may finish several minutes sooner, so check early.

Why are my sweet potato wedges soft rather than crisp?

They may be crowded, wet or cut too thickly. Dry them, coat lightly with oil and leave space for air to circulate.
