Quick answer
Cook evenly thick, lightly oiled chicken breasts at about 185–190°C for roughly 14–22 minutes, turning once. Start checking early and use a clean probe in the thickest part: UK Food Standards Agency guidance includes 75°C for 30 seconds, or 70°C for 2 minutes. Rest for five minutes.
Estimated air-fryer chicken breast times
| Breast size | Temperature | Estimated time | Safety check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small, 140–170g | 185–190°C / 365–375°F | 14–17 min | 75°C for 30 sec |
| Medium, 180–220g | 185–190°C / 365–375°F | 17–20 min | 75°C for 30 sec |
| Large, 230–280g | 180–190°C / 355–375°F | 20–25 min | 75°C for 30 sec |
One versus two chicken breasts
One breast often cooks a little faster because air can circulate freely. Two can cook together if they sit in one layer without touching. If they overlap or fill the basket edge to edge, cook in separate batches.
Thickness, weight and preheating
Thickness predicts cooking time better than weight. Gently flatten the thick end so each breast is reasonably even. Preheat only when your model recommends it; if preheated, begin checking near the lower end of the range.
Seasoning and turning
Pat dry, coat with a teaspoon of oil and season all over. Place in the basket smooth-side down, then turn halfway for even colour. Salt, pepper, garlic granules, paprika, thyme and lemon zest are simple options.
How to know chicken is safely cooked
Do not rely on colour or time alone. Insert a clean thermometer horizontally into the thickest part without passing through the meat. The Food Standards Agency lists equivalent safe combinations including 75°C for 30 seconds and 70°C for 2 minutes.
Resting and avoiding dry chicken
Move the chicken to a clean plate as soon as the safe temperature is reached and rest for five minutes. Even thickness, an early temperature check and a short rest matter more than adding extra oil. Slice across the fibres.
Fresh versus frozen
For predictable, even cooking, defrost frozen chicken safely in the fridge first. If a product is designed for cooking from frozen, follow its packet and appliance instructions and still verify the core temperature.
Serving, storage and reheating
Serve sliced chicken with rice, couscous, salad or roasted vegetables. Cool leftovers, cover and refrigerate within two hours; eat within 48 hours or freeze. Reheat only once until steaming hot throughout.

Frequently asked questions
How long does one chicken breast take in an air fryer?
A small, even breast may take 14–17 minutes at 185–190°C, but thickness and model vary. Verify the safe core temperature.
Should I flip chicken breast in the air fryer?
Turning once generally gives more even browning, though some dual-heating models may not require it.
